RAK’s biggest weight loss challenge sees record-breaking participation in 2025
New family category introduced; cash prizes and health rewards announced

RAS AL KHAIMAH: The fifth edition of the RAK Biggest Weight Loss Challenge 2025 (RBWLC25) has shattered previous records, drawing an unprecedented 24,189 participants.
Organised by RAK Hospital in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Prevention Ras Al Khaimah, the initiative has grown by 33 percent from last year’s 18,000 registrations.
The overwhelming response underscores a growing awareness of health and fitness across the UAE.
Emirates’ breakdown
Ras Al Khaimah leads the participation figures with 10,842 people (49 percent), followed by Dubai with 7,067 (31 percent).
Sharjah recorded 1,621 participants (8 percent), while 1,535 individuals (7 percent) enrolled from Abu Dhabi.
The remaining 1,124 participants (5 percent) represent other Emirates. The gender ratio remains fairly balanced, with 54 percent male and 46 percent female participants.
Obesity concerns
A significant 80 percent of all registrants fall into the obese category, reflecting a major health concern. The heaviest male participant weighs 291 kg, while the heaviest female contestant weighs 197 kg. The challenge also highlighted a worrying trend among children – of 3,000 school students screened, 70 percent were found to be overweight.
Dr. Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director of RAK Hospital, emphasised the challenge’s crucial role in addressing obesity: "We are witnessing a national health crisis, with 80 percent of adult participants under 40 struggling with obesity. More alarmingly, 70 percent of children enrolled in the school category are overweight. These numbers signal an urgent need for intervention. The goal of this challenge is not just weight loss but fostering a culture of long-term wellness."
Exciting rewards
RBWLC25 spans 12 weeks, concluding on May 22, 2025. The programme offers expert guidance, including weekly webinars featuring health and wellness specialists. Participants receive tailored advice on sustainable weight loss, exercise routines, and nutrition.
