Sharjah Airport has reported a significant rise in its passenger and cargo operations, recording a remarkable 10 percent increase in passenger traffic and an impressive 32 percent surge in cargo handling during the third quarter of 2024.
With over 4.4 million passengers passing through, the airport’s operational momentum showcases a resilient trajectory, reinforcing its status as a growing hub for air traffic in the region.
Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA), expressed his optimism about the airport’s recent achievements, noting, "Sharjah Airport remains a key contributor to Sharjah’s diverse economic sectors, especially tourism, trade, and business. The positive growth in travel, aviation, and cargo strengthens the airport’s competitive edge, reinforcing its position as a leading service provider and supporting its goal to become one of the top five regional airports."
Sharjah Airport’s success
The rise in Sharjah Airport’s traffic was mirrored by an increase in flight operations, as it saw a 6.7 percent growth, with over 27,758 flights managed by 35 airlines. This expansion aligns with Sharjah’s broader economic vision, enhancing its connectivity and providing a seamless travel experience for passengers and airlines alike.
The airport’s cargo operations also witnessed substantial growth, with 46,284 tonnes handled, a 32 percent year-on-year increase, along with a 7.8 percent boost in sea-air cargo operations.

Al Midfa added, "The airport’s increasing operational performance aligns with the broad economic growth in Sharjah, affirming it as a premier destination for tourism, investment, residence, and business."
Sharjah Airport expansion
The ongoing expansion project at Sharjah Airport is designed to raise its capacity to an impressive 25 million passengers annually by 2027, with plans to further develop its cargo handling capabilities. This initiative underscores the SAA's commitment to building infrastructure that can accommodate higher volumes, streamline operations, and maintain its competitive standing in the region.
