This pioneering initiative aims to nurture future esports and game design talent, providing students unmatched opportunities in competitive gaming.
Dubai: GEMS Education has announced the launch of its revolutionary Esports and Game Design Academy, set to debut across all GEMS schools in September 2024. This pioneering initiative aims to cultivate the next generation of esports and game design talent, offering students unparalleled opportunities in the fast-growing field of competitive gaming.
Paving the Way for future esports champions
The Academy will feature a robust scholarship prize fund designed to support students' aspirations in esports and game design. This initiative aligns with the UAE's broader strategy to position itself as a global gaming and esports hub. Spearheaded by the Dubai Future Foundation, this strategy includes a $1 billion ecosystem to create 30,000 jobs by 2033, as envisioned by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Holistic development and educational excellence
Sunny Varkey, Group Chairman of GEMS Global and Founder of the Varkey Foundation and GEMS Education, emphasized the transformative potential of the Academy. “Esports is more than just gaming; it’s about developing critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills,” Varkey stated. “Students will have the opportunity to create 2D and 3D games from a young age, gaining access to industry-level game design learning.”
The Academy will foster safe, engaging environments through age-appropriate games, supporting the holistic development of students with a focus on personal, social, and cognitive skills. Additionally, it will provide structured platforms for learning materials, league participation, competitions, hackathons, accreditations, and qualifications.
Leading the region in educational innovation
Baz Nijjar, Principal Advisor – Education Technology at GEMS Education and a member of the Dubai Program for Gaming 2033 Working Group, highlighted GEMS’ leadership in educational innovation. “Our approach places GEMS Education at the forefront in the region. The Academy is about more than fostering gaming talent; it’s about creating a dynamic learning environment where students can thrive and develop essential skills,” Nijjar said.
Nijjar also emphasized the Academy’s commitment to providing a safe and secure gaming environment, promoting well-being, nutrition, fitness, and mental dexterity, mirroring the holistic approach of professional esports athletes.
A track record of success
GEMS Education has a four-year history of promoting esports and game design, offering students unique opportunities, and launching the first K-12 qualifications in these fields in the Middle East. GEMS students and staff have gained accreditations from industry leaders like Unreal Engine and Unity, and have competed successfully in regional and global tournaments.
Aliya Al Marzooqi, a trailblazing GEMS student and the first female Emirati in K-12 education to graduate with dual qualifications in esports and game design, reflected on her journey. “The skills and experiences I’ve gained have empowered me as I pursue my passion,” she said. “I am committed to promoting gender equality and encouraging more women to take bold steps into the world of game design and esports.”
The launch of the GEMS Esports and Game Design Academy represents a significant step forward in educational innovation, preparing students for success in the rapidly evolving gaming industry. By providing comprehensive support and development opportunities, GEMS Education is ensuring that its students are well-equipped to excel in both gaming and life.
