New Zealand’s revamped Active Investor Plus Visa has officially launched, introducing new investment categories, reduced residency requirements, and an easier application process.

The updated rules, effective 1 April 2025, aim to attract high-net-worth individuals by offering greater flexibility and more investment options.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford confirmed a surge in interest, particularly from investors in the US and Europe, as global economic shifts drive demand for alternative residency options.

Benefits of Golden Visa

The updated program makes it easier for foreign investors to secure New Zealand residency through direct investment. Key benefits include:

  • Lower Investment Thresholds: Investors can now apply under two simplified categories:
  • Growth: NZD $5 million minimum investment over three years
  • Balanced: NZD $10 million minimum investment over five years
  • Reduced Residency Requirements: Investors in the Growth category need to spend just 21 days in New Zealand over three years, while Balanced category investors must stay 105 days over five years.
  • No English-Language Requirement: Unlike previous versions, applicants no longer need to meet English proficiency standards.
  • Broader Investment Options: The Balanced category now includes bonds and property developments, alongside business investments.
  • Fast-Track Approval: Applications are expected to be processed more efficiently, with funds required to be invested within six months of approval.

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the New Zealand visa under the Active Investor Plus program, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass a character and health check
  • Meet the minimum investment requirement for their chosen category
  • Have legally sourced funds
  • Agree to maintain their investment for the full required period

How to apply

Applications for the Active Investor Plus Visa are now open and can be submitted online through Immigration New Zealand’s (INZ) website. The process includes:

  • Pre-Application Assessment: Investors may seek guidance from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) to explore investment opportunities.
  • Submit Application: Provide identity documents, proof of funds, and a detailed investment plan.
  • Approval in Principle: If successful, applicants receive conditional approval and have six months to transfer funds.
  • Final Approval & Residency Grant: Once the investment is completed, permanent residency is granted.

With NZD $1 billion in projected investment expected by the end of 2025, the new visa rules are set to boost New Zealand’s economy while providing a streamlined pathway for global investors seeking long-term residency.
