More than 1.3 million Indian students went abroad mostly to Canada, US and UK
Dubai: Number of Indian students studying abroad has almost doubled during the last four years, statistics released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) that a record-breaking 1,335,878 Indian students are now pursuing their studies at international institutions. This staggering figure marks a dramatic leap from the 675,541 students reported in 2019, effectively doubling the number of students studying abroad in just six years.
Top global hotspots for Indian scholars
According to the latest statistics, here are the leading countries where Indian students are heading for their higher education:
- Canada: 427,000 students
- USA: 337,630 students
- UK: 185,000 students
- Australia: 122,202 students
- Germany: 42,997 students
Rising trend in international education
The MEA’s update, prompted by a query from Dr John Brittas MP, underscores a notable shift towards global academic experiences among Indian students. With a clear preference for international education, Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, and Germany have emerged as top destinations, reflecting an expanding global footprint of Indian academia.
