DUBAI: As Ramadan begins, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and Dubai Municipality have issued a set of health recommendations to help residents maintain their well-being while fasting.

The guidelines cover essential aspects such as sleep, exercise, hydration, and nutrition to ensure a smooth and healthy experience throughout the holy month.

The advisory, shared via social media, highlights the importance of following healthy habits to prevent fatigue, dehydration, and digestive issues, all of which can arise due to long fasting hours.

Sleep for sustained energy

A key recommendation from DHA is to ensure a minimum of four hours of sleep before suhoor. Proper rest helps maintain energy levels and keeps the body functioning efficiently throughout the fasting period.

Dubai Municipality has also urged residents to prioritise sleep, warning that poor rest can lead to sluggishness and low productivity during the day. Late-night eating and excessive screen time should be avoided to ensure better sleep quality.

Exercise at the right time

Physical activity remains important during Ramadan, but choosing the right time to work out is essential. DHA advises at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily to stay active. Those aiming for weight loss are encouraged to exercise an hour before iftar to maximise fat burning.

However, exercising under direct sunlight or in hot environments is discouraged, as it increases the risk of dehydration and fatigue. Instead, indoor workouts or evening walks are recommended.

Smart eating and hydration

Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining energy levels. DHA recommends drinking plenty of fluids, as well as consuming nuts and fish, which are rich in vitamin E and help regenerate skin cells.

Overeating at night, particularly before sleeping, can cause acid reflux and disrupt sleep. DHA warns against consuming fatty foods and soft drinks, as they can lead to skin breakouts and sluggishness.

Dubai Municipality advises maintaining a balanced diet, limiting fast food, and reducing high-fat and high-sugar intake. Hydration is equally important, with authorities stressing the need to drink enough water between iftar and suhoor.

Fasting guidelines for children

Parents have been urged to introduce fasting to children gradually. DHA advises against letting young children, especially those under nine, rush into full-day fasting. Instead, children should be eased into the practice with shorter fasting hours to help their bodies adjust.
