Air Kerala, owned by Dubai residents, gears up for 2025 launch in India
Agreements with Kannur and Mysuru airports mark a huge step forward
Air Kerala, a regional airline owned by Dubai-based businessmen, is set to revolutionise air travel in India.
The airline has formalised agreements with Kannur International Airport in Kerala and Mysuru Airport in Karnataka, with its first flight expected to take off in June 2025.
“This is a huge step for us,” said Chairman Afi Ahmed, who also helms Smart Travel Group in Sharjah. “We are committed to enhancing regional connectivity.”
The airline’s main base will be Kochi, with operations initially targeting domestic routes within a 90-minute flying radius from Kannur. Air Kerala will connect tier-2 and tier-3 cities to major metro hubs, creating seamless travel options for passengers.
Air Kerala
Air Kerala has teamed up with the Airports Authority of India-Mysuru, supported by local representatives like MP Yaduveer Wadiyar. The partnership includes plans for an aviation academy in Mysuru, featuring an ATR-72-600 simulator for world-class training.
This move is expected to boost Mysuru’s tourism, famous for landmarks like Mysuru Palace and wellness retreats, while fostering local talent in aviation.
Kannur International Airport will serve as Air Kerala’s primary hub. Its strategic location offers an operational advantage, with the airline planning to expand its network to international destinations by late 2026.
Ahmed emphasised the mutual benefits of the partnership with Kannur: “Together, we aim to provide reliable and affordable travel solutions.”
Affordable and timely travel
Air Kerala promises affordability and punctuality. CEO Hareesh Kutty highlighted their commitment to offering tickets at competitive prices while ensuring on-time performance.
Initially, the airline will operate ATR72-600 turboprops, later transitioning to narrow-body jets to expand its domestic and international reach.
The airline is focusing on hiring aviation professionals from the UAE and GCC, prioritising experienced personnel for commercial and operational roles. Last year, key positions like CEO, CFO, and pilot leadership were filled, setting the stage for a robust operational launch.
Air Kerala aims to position Kannur as a major hub for international connectivity. Future destinations include Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Gulf region, catering to India’s vast diaspora and regional travellers.
