Dubai: A generous amnesty program launched by the UAE government is offering a lifeline to thousands of individuals facing legal consequences for visa violations. The initiative, which began on September 1, allows those who have overstayed their visas, absconded from their sponsors, or have arrest warrants issued against them to leave the country without facing penalties.

Eligibility criteria for amnesty

As announced by Dr. Ali Humaid bin Khatam, the head of naturalization and residency prosecution for Dubai Public Prosecution, detainees under investigation for absconding or overstaying are eligible to apply for amnesty."We have directions from Dubai's Attorney General to help violators and assist them with the process," he stated.

However, the amnesty does not apply to individuals who entered the UAE illegally, have deportation cases from GCC countries, or have committed serious criminal offenses. Additionally, those who have unresolved legal disputes not covered under the amnesty are not eligible.

Process for obtaining amnesty

The amnesty process involves detainees visiting designated amnesty centers to obtain an exit pass without paying overstaying fines or facing legal consequences. Once their paperwork is finalized, they must return to the detention center where the prosecutors will close their case.

Benefits of amnesty

Despite the eligibility criteria, the amnesty offers a much-needed reprieve to those who have amassed substantial fines due to overstaying their visas. According to UAE law, the penalty for overstaying a visa is calculated at Dh50 ($13.60) a day for tourists and residents.

Response to amnesty initiative

The initiative has already seen a significant response, with over 1,000 people applying in Dubai on the first day to change their status or leave the country. The amnesty provides a crucial opportunity for individuals to return to their home countries without facing legal repercussions or financial burdens.

Call to action for visa violators

To take advantage of the amnesty, individuals can visit the designated amnesty centers in their respective emirates. In Dubai, people can approach 86 Amer service centers across the Emirates or Al Awir Center. Those who arrived in the UAE on a visit visa are required to visit ICP centers to collect fingerprint scans.

It's important to note that the amnesty is a time-limited initiative, and individuals are encouraged to act promptly to avoid missing out on this opportunity. By availing themselves of the amnesty, individuals can avoid the stress and financial strain associated with visa violations and return to their home countries with peace of mind.
