DUBAI: Moscow, the capital of Russia, is setting ambitious tourism targets, with plans to attract over 50 million annual visitors by 2030, up from the current 26 million.

A key part of this strategy involves strengthening ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a rapidly growing market for Russian tourism.

Speaking at a media gathering in Dubai, Bulat Nurmukhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, highlighted the surge in UAE travellers to Moscow. “By the first nine months of last year, we welcomed over 40,000 tourists from the UAE – compared to just 5,000 in 2022. The growth is phenomenal, and we are here to sustain this momentum,” he said in an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

UAE travellers drive Moscow’s tourism growth

Moscow’s growing popularity among UAE travellers is attributed to its rich cultural heritage, improved connectivity, and ease of travel. Currently, more than 200 flights operate weekly between Moscow and major UAE cities, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.

“The Gulf region, especially the UAE, is a key market for us, and we are eager to see more Emirati visitors enjoying Moscow as a regular destination,” Nurmukhanov said.

E-visa scheme to boost UAE expat travel

While Emirati citizens enjoy visa-free travel to Russia for up to 90 days, Moscow is encouraging UAE expatriates to take advantage of the country’s expanded e-visa system. The electronic visa, which is now valid for 30 days, is available to nationals from 60 countries, including India, China, Bahrain, and several European nations.

“The application process is simple, allowing travellers to apply online and receive their e-visa within four to five working days,” Nurmukhanov explained.

Moscow and UAE strengthen bilateral ties

Beyond tourism, Russia and the UAE continue to strengthen business and diplomatic relations. In January, both countries signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), which is expected to encourage investment and financial cooperation.

With Moscow’s growing engagement in the Middle East and its strategic plans for tourism, the relationship between Russia and the UAE is set to expand further, fostering new opportunities across travel, trade, and cultural exchange.
