RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has expanded its Absher platform, introducing essential passport and visa services aimed at improving efficiency for citizens and expatriates.
The initiative, launched by General Director of Passports Major General Dr. Saleh bin Saad Al Murabba in collaboration with the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), is part of the kingdom’s ongoing digital transformation.
The newly introduced services include renewing residency permits for mothers of Saudi citizens, adding dependents, and cancelling expired exit and re-entry visas. These updates are expected to save time, enhance accuracy in transactions, and simplify government procedures for users.
Expanded features for users
Beyond passport and visa-related services, the Absher app now allows users to upload photos of dependents for passport issuance or renewal, update passport data for foreign residents, and access a digital identity feature. This digital identity function enables expatriates to display their credentials when required by authorities.
Additional features include services linked to Saudi national ID cards, such as renewing, replacing lost or damaged IDs, and submitting personal photos directly through the app. Users can also update their educational qualifications registered in the Ministry of Education’s system via Absher.
Simplifying government transactions
The Interior Ministry’s Directorate of Civil Affairs confirmed that beneficiaries can access the new services through their Absher accounts on both the web and smartphone app. These digital solutions align with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to modernise government services and enhance accessibility for the public.
Launched in 2013, Absher has significantly evolved, offering a wide range of services including passport renewals, driving licence applications, and job opportunities. The kingdom’s digital shift has accelerated in recent years, particularly following the global pandemic, as authorities continue to streamline bureaucratic processes through technology.
