ABU DHABI: From 14 April 2025, motorists in Abu Dhabi will need to adjust to new speed regulations on two of the emirate’s busiest highways.
The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has announced a 20km/h reduction in speed limits for both Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road (E11) and Abu Dhabi–Sweihan Road (E20).
This move forms part of the emirate’s broader initiative to enhance road safety and minimise traffic-related incidents.
Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Highway
The Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Highway (E11), one of the most heavily trafficked roads in the UAE, will see its maximum permitted speed lowered from 160km/h to 140km/h. The change is set to take effect on Sunday, 14 April 2025, and will apply across the designated sections of the highway.
Abu Dhabi–Sweihan Road
Similarly, the Abu Dhabi–Sweihan Road (E20) will experience a reduction in its speed ceiling, moving from 120km/h to 100km/h. This arterial route connects key suburban and rural areas to central Abu Dhabi and is a critical corridor for daily commuters and logistics operators.
Safety-driven policy
Officials from Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Mobility emphasised that the revised speed limits are part of a concerted campaign to reduce accident rates and encourage safer driving habits.
They also reminded all road users to comply with the new regulations and remain vigilant behind the wheel. The public was informed via official statements and social media platforms, including posts on X (formerly Twitter), where the changes were detailed alongside the implementation date.
With the countdown to enforcement underway, residents and regular road users are being urged to plan their journeys accordingly and adjust their driving to align with the revised speed limits.
