Sharjah: Sharjah's tourism sector is on an upward trajectory, recording a 3.07% increase in visitor numbers during the first eight months of 2024. Hotel guests reached 1.057 million, compared to 1.025 million in the same period last year.
This growth coincides with a steady 66% hotel occupancy rate, highlighted during the Connected Meeting hosted by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) at the Sharjah Research, Technology, and Innovation Park.
Russia leads as top source market
Russia dominated as the top visitor source, contributing 21% of all guests, followed by India (10%) and Oman (6%).
Domestic tourism accounted for 11%, emphasising the importance of UAE-based visitors. New tourist destinations and marine transport services aimed at enhancing travel experiences.
Strategic plans for future expansion
New plans to drive further growth with international partnerships, AI-enhanced customer engagement, and advanced digital outreach have also been shared.
Unique and engaging events are also going to take space in Sharjah.
Public-private synergy powers growth
SCTDA also emphasised the crucial role of public-private partnerships in advancing Sharjah’s tourism sector, which contributes over 11% to the UAE’s non-oil GDP. Infrastructure investments, including expanding Sharjah International Airport, are part of efforts to enhance visitor appeal.
Cultural tourism takes the spotlight
Sharjah continues to prioritise cultural tourism with eco-friendly resorts and historic preservation projects. Shurooq’s Khawla Al Hashimi stressed the goal of offering “genuine experiences” through initiatives like the Moon Retreat camp and nature reserves.
Unique alternative to Dubai
Unlike Dubai’s luxury-driven approach, Sharjah focuses on cultural and eco-tourism, restoring traditional souks and preserving its heritage. With these strategic efforts, Sharjah is positioning itself as a distinctive and growing destination for travelers seeking authentic experiences.
