Lahore: Arshad Nadeem’s historic gold medal at the Paris Olympics has ignited a flurry of claims about who deserves credit for his triumph. While the nation basks in the glory, it's essential to dissect the journey that led to this monumental achievement.
Wapda: The foundation stone
Nadeem's athletic odyssey began with Wapda, who identified his raw talent in grade 11. The sports board meticulously nurtured his potential, resulting in Bronze at the Asian Junior Athletics Championship in 2016.
His trajectory continued to ascend, culminating in the national championship in 2019 and a Bronze at the Asian Games in 2018. A fifth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics earned him a promotion to grade 18, as confirmed by former Wapda Chairman Lt Gen Muzammal (R).
The role of financial incentives
Post-Tokyo Olympics, the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) secured a substantial monthly scholarship for Nadeem from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The government of Pakistan also rewarded his efforts with a cash prize of Rs 2.5 million. His subsequent gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, coupled with a new game record, brought in another Rs 5 million.
A collaborative effort
The increased attention on Nadeem following his successes has spurred greater support from Wapda, the government, and the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP). The federation secured foreign training opportunities, while the government funded his participation in international events to enhance his skills and confidence.
Unfounded narratives and the truth
Social media has a penchant for crafting narratives that often overshadow reality. In the case of Arshad Nadeem's golden triumph, unfounded stories about a lack of support and equipment have been circulated with alarming speed. It's essential to dispel these myths and shed light on the actual journey of this exceptional athlete.
Contrary to the sensationalized accounts, Arshad Nadeem has consistently received support from various quarters. From his early days at Wapda to the subsequent backing of the Pakistan Olympic Association, the government, and the Athletics Federation of Pakistan, there has been a concerted effort to nurture his talent.
The Rift and its Impact
Painfully POA and AFP have not had good terms since four medal winners of the SAF games tested positive during dope tests and medals had to be returned. AFP refused to participate in the inquiry proceedings resulting in its disaffiliation with POA. This tussle has harmed the development of athletes in track events. Now is the time that fences are mended and normalcy restored.
Unsung heroes
While the spotlight shines on Nadeem, the contributions of his coach, Salman Butt, and doctor, Bajwa, cannot be overlooked. Butt's unwavering dedication and Bajwa's medical expertise, including successful knee surgery, were instrumental in Nadeem's journey.
A call for unity
As Pakistan celebrates this historic victory, it's imperative to recognize the collective efforts that made it possible. Rather than engaging in a blame game, the focus should be on creating a sustainable ecosystem for athletes to thrive.
By acknowledging the contributions of all stakeholders and addressing the existing challenges, Pakistan can pave the way for future sporting triumphs.
