Dubai International (DXB) is set to see a major influx of travellers during the winter holiday season, with more than 5.2 million people expected to pass through the airport between December 13 and 31. The daily average is projected at approximately 274,000 passengers, with Friday, December 20, forecast to be the busiest day, as nearly 296,000 people travel through DXB. The peak period, from December 20 to 22, will see an estimated 880,000 passengers in total.
Essa Al Shamsi, Senior Vice President of Terminal Operations at Dubai Airports, emphasised the airport's readiness to handle the surge in traffic, stating, “Delivering the exceptional experience that DXB is known for during peak travel periods is always a challenge, but one we are well-prepared to meet with collaboration across the oneDXB family.” This year’s holiday season is especially exciting as DXB has planned a range of festive activations, ensuring that passengers can enjoy a unique experience as they travel.
Festive surprises at DXB
Among the most exciting features at DXB this season will be the transformation of the Family Zone at Terminal 3 into a winter wonderland. Visitors can enjoy a variety of festive activities, including a fusion performance by carollers and beatboxers, a Magic Station offering gift-wrapping and photo opportunities, and a Nutcracker marching band. These activities are designed to surprise and delight passengers, making their travel through DXB a truly memorable experience.
The winter surge in passenger traffic highlights Dubai’s continued global appeal as a prime holiday destination, with its vibrant shopping, dining, and entertainment offerings, not to mention the pleasant winter weather. Of the anticipated 5.2 million guests, 1.7 million are expected to arrive in Dubai, while 1.5 million will depart. This underscores Dubai’s rising position as a top choice for international travellers.
Smart Travel Tips
To help ensure a smooth travel experience during this busy period, Dubai Airports has issued a set of practical travel tips:
Check-in Early: Emirates passengers can use home check-in, early check-in, and city check-in facilities. Other travellers should arrive no earlier than three hours before departure.
Pack Smart: Place metal items and electronics in hand luggage, and follow regulations for liquids, aerosols, and gels. Remember that portable electronic devices, power banks, and spare batteries are prohibited in checked luggage.
Use Smart Gates: Families with children over 12 years old can expedite passport control through Smart Gates.
Plan Ahead: Organise travel documents in advance, check baggage allowances, and review airline regulations to avoid any last-minute issues.
Avoid Congestion: For easier access to Terminals 1 and 3, opt for the Dubai Metro. To avoid overcrowding, passengers should say their goodbyes at home, as only travellers are allowed inside terminals during peak periods.
Future growth for Dubai Airports
This seasonal traffic surge builds on DXB’s ongoing growth. Dubai Airports continues to solidify its position as the world’s busiest international airport by passenger numbers, as it welcomed 87 million guests in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The airport is forecast to reach 92 million passengers in 2024, demonstrating its global importance.
Looking to the future, Dubai World Central (DWC) is part of Dubai’s long-term vision for aviation growth. Announced in May 2024, DWC’s expansion plans include a record US$35 billion investment to reshape the global aviation landscape. DWC aims to handle 150 million passengers annually by 2034 and expand further to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo in the coming decades. The new design and intermodal connectivity promise to set new standards for efficiency and passenger experience.
