Arshad pleads government to improve his village's infrastructure
He wants higher education facilities provided at the doorstep of his villagers, in addition to access to a gas supply.
Mian Channu-- In a poignant appeal that has captured the nation's attention, Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem has used his newfound platform to highlight the stark realities faced by his hometown.
The javelin champion, whose historic victory in Paris brought immense pride to Pakistan, has called upon the government to address the pressing needs of his village.
"My village needs better roads. It would also be wonderful if the government could supply cooking gas for us," Nadeem told reporters. The champion's plea extended beyond basic amenities. "I have a dream that Mian Channu gets its university so that our sisters won't have to travel 1.5 to 2 hours to Multan for their education," he added.
Nadeem grabbed headlines last Thursday when he bagged Pakistan’s first individual gold medal in the men’s javelin throw competition during the Paris Olympics 2024. He threw the javelin at a distance of 92.97 meters, a new Olympic record to knock former Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra to second position.
Following Nadeem’s triumph at the Olympics, Pakistani politicians announced cash rewards and honors for the star javelin thrower. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced a Rs50,000,000 [$179,524] cash award for Nadeem and promised to establish an athletics academy named after the Olympian.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday announced he would award the country’s highest civilian honor, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, to Nadeem in a special ceremony.
