ABU DHABI: The capital city of United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to become the epicentre of the global jazz community as it prepares to host International Jazz Day 2025.

Recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, Abu Dhabi will welcome some of the world’s most celebrated jazz artists on 30 April, with performances and events highlighting the genre’s ability to unite cultures.

It comes as part of Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to enhance its cultural landscape, positioning itself as a major hub for international music and the arts.

Hosted in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the event will celebrate jazz’s deep-rooted heritage while integrating Arabic musical influences into the performances. The fusion of classical instruments such as the oud, qanoon, and ney flute with jazz improvisations will create a distinct musical experience for audiences worldwide.

A celebration of Jazz

Since its establishment by UNESCO in 2011, International Jazz Day has grown into a global movement, reaching over two billion people through concerts, educational initiatives, and outreach programmes. The 2025 edition in Abu Dhabi will feature an All-Star Global Concert at the iconic Etihad Arena, bringing together a stellar lineup of musicians, including jazz luminary Herbie Hancock, who has been instrumental in shaping the event’s vision.

“Jazz is a universal language that transcends borders, and we are thrilled to bring this celebration to Abu Dhabi,” said Hancock, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue. “The city’s rich cultural history and commitment to artistic innovation make it the perfect setting for International Jazz Day.”

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, echoed the sentiment, stating, “International Jazz Day heads to Abu Dhabi in 2025, infusing new energy and celebrating the power of jazz to connect people through shared artistic expression.”

Cultural and educational initiatives

Beyond the concerts, the event will offer a range of educational programmes designed to engage aspiring musicians and jazz enthusiasts. Workshops and masterclasses will take place across Abu Dhabi, with institutions such as Berklee Abu Dhabi and New York University Abu Dhabi playing key roles in fostering jazz education. These initiatives will provide students with opportunities to learn from world-renowned artists, expanding their understanding of jazz’s evolution and its impact on global music traditions.

In addition, local schools will be actively involved, with curated sessions aimed at introducing younger audiences to jazz. This focus on education aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader vision of nurturing a culturally rich and artistically vibrant community.

Abu Dhabi’s growing cultural influence

Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, expressed pride in the city’s selection as the 2025 Global Host City, calling it a testament to Abu Dhabi’s dedication to fostering cultural dialogue through music.

“This recognition underscores our city’s thriving music scene and our unwavering commitment to artistic excellence,” said Al Mubarak. “Hosting International Jazz Day reaffirms Abu Dhabi’s place on the world stage as a destination for artistic and cultural innovation.”

The city has been investing significantly in its cultural sector, attracting international festivals, exhibitions, and institutions while also supporting home-grown talent. The integration of jazz into Abu Dhabi’s music scene further cements its status as a global hub for artistic expression.

International Jazz Day’s presence in the UAE capital is expected to leave a lasting impact, not only by showcasing world-class performances but also by strengthening cultural ties and inspiring a new generation of musicians. The celebration will culminate in a spectacular concert at Etihad Arena, marking a milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey as a leading force in the global music community.
