Etihad Airways has resumed its esteemed Cadet Pilot Programme, providing young Emiratis a golden opportunity to pursue a career in aviation.

After a four-year hiatus, the airline is welcoming UAE nationals aged between 17 and 28, with a high school diploma, to enroll in the UAE National Cadet Pilot Programme. No prior aviation experience is necessary, opening doors to a broader pool of aspirants with a passion for flying.

Over two years, cadets will undergo rigorous training, including six months of practical flying in Spain, followed by simulator sessions in Abu Dhabi. The curriculum is designed to ensure graduates are fully prepared for a professional pilot’s lifestyle.

What is the Etihad Airways Cadet Pilot Programme?

The UAE National Cadet Pilot Programme is a two-year comprehensive training initiative that aims to prepare cadets for successful careers in aviation. Open to both male and female Emiratis, the programme offers participants the chance to train at Etihad's state-of-the-art Training Academy in Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa City A.

The training includes 18 months of studying 14 subjects, covering theoretical knowledge and practical skills. As part of the programme, cadets will be seconded to Spain for six months of real flying experience, followed by simulator training sessions back in Abu Dhabi. The combination of practical and technical knowledge ensures that cadets are well-prepared for the demands of a professional pilot’s lifestyle.

Etihad’s Commitment to National Talent

At the heart of the programme is Etihad’s dedication to empowering the next generation of Emirati pilots. Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Chief People and Corporate Affairs Officer at Etihad Airways, reiterated the airline’s focus on investing in national talent. “We are excited to open the UAE National Cadet Pilot programme to give opportunity to ambitious Emiratis who aspire to work for the national carrier of their country. By empowering Emirati pilots, we not only strengthen the aviation industry but also cultivate a legacy of excellence that uplifts the nation,” she said in an official press release.

This programme is seen as a critical component of Etihad's long-term strategy, which aims to double the size of its network and fleet by 2030. With the goal of graduating around 60 cadets annually over the next six to seven years, Etihad is ensuring a steady flow of qualified professionals to meet the growing demands of the aviation sector.

Full List of Requirements for Aspiring Pilots

The Cadet Pilot Programme is open to UAE nationals aged 18 to 29. Candidates must have a strong command of English, a high school diploma or higher, and a minimum IELTS score of 5.5. Male candidates must have completed or be exempt from their UAE National Service.

In addition to meeting these basic requirements, candidates must undergo a series of assessments, including tests in English, Mathematics, and Physics. They will also complete psychometric evaluations and a medical examination as mandated by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Graduating with Wings

The UAE National Cadet Pilot Programme is a continuation of Etihad's long-standing tradition of excellence. Since its inception in 2007, almost 400 Emirati men and women have successfully completed the programme, with many moving on to become Captains, First Officers, and Second Officers.

One of the most notable success stories is that of Captain Aisha Al Mansoori, the first female Emirati to captain a commercial airline. Her success has inspired many young Emiratis, especially women, to take up the challenge of aviation.

How to Apply

Registration for the programme is now open, and interested candidates can apply through the official Etihad Airways career portal (careers.etihad.com). The application process is rigorous but offers a unique opportunity to work for one of the world’s leading airlines and embark on an exciting career in aviation.

Partnership to Strengthen Abu Dhabi’s Aviation Sector

In a significant development, Etihad Airways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport. The agreement, signed during the graduation ceremony for 70 cadet pilots, highlights a collaborative effort to create a robust talent pipeline for the UAE’s aviation industry.

His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of both Etihad Airways and the Department of Municipalities and Transport, commented on the importance of the programme for the UAE’s long-term aviation goals. “Each of the pilots who have graduated through Etihad’s Cadet Pilot programme has a personal story of hard work, dedication, and passion for flying; yet they also form part of a much larger vision. They play an invaluable role in helping to realise the dream of our Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,” he said.
