DUBAI: Residents in Abu Dhabi are being warned to keep their balconies and windows clear or risk stiff penalties of up to Dh2,000.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has reiterated its enforcement of regulations that prohibit drying laundry, displaying carpets, or placing any form of coverings on balconies or windows facing public roads.

This move comes as part of the capital’s efforts to uphold cleanliness and urban organisation.

What's banned

According to Clause 12, placing drying racks on windows or balconies visible from public roads is not allowed. Clause 15 goes further to prohibit cleaning or airing carpets, rugs, and other coverings in these areas. Both measures aim to preserve Abu Dhabi’s visual appeal and prevent clutter in residential spaces.

Fines breakdown

While these regulations have long existed, the DMT is now actively reminding residents of the escalating penalties. First-time violations carry a fine of Dh500. A second offence will cost Dh1,000, and repeated breaches can lead to a Dh2,000 fine. These rules were reinforced via a social media post on April 13, echoing a similar campaign last month targeting abandoned and dirty vehicles on city streets.

Authorities have urged residents to use indoor drying racks or alternative indoor solutions to avoid fines.
