Saudi Arabia launches first-ever women-only bus service at Mecca’s Grand Mosque
New initiative ensures privacy, comfort, and security for female pilgrims at Masjid Al Haram

MECCA: A groundbreaking initiative has been launched at Masjid Al Haram, offering a dedicated transport service exclusively for female pilgrims.
The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque announced that the all-female bus service aims to enhance convenience, privacy, and safety for women performing their religious rituals.
Strategically stationed near the Al-Marwah Gate, the buses are designed to facilitate movement within the holy site, particularly during high-traffic periods. Each vehicle is operated by a fully female staff, ensuring a comfortable environment for passengers. Equipped with sterilised tools and modern safety features, the service is expected to ease congestion and provide a seamless journey for worshippers.
Women-only bus service in Mecca
This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to improve the logistical infrastructure of the Grand Mosque, which sees millions of visitors annually. The presidency emphasised that the buses will help female pilgrims navigate the mosque’s vast premises with greater ease, allowing them to perform their rituals in an atmosphere of spiritual serenity.
In addition to the bus service, a newly introduced Tahallul cart system has been implemented to assist women in completing the final steps of Umrah. These specialised carts, located near Bab Al-Marwah, are also operated exclusively by female staff and provide a private space for pilgrims to perform the ritual of exiting Ihram. The carts are equipped with sterilised tools to maintain hygiene standards and ensure a smooth process.
Expanding services for worshippers
As part of its commitment to improving the pilgrimage experience, the General Authority has also introduced mobile units offering sterilised shaving and haircutting services for male pilgrims. Five designated locations near the Marwah area now allow worshippers to complete their Umrah without delays, with expert teams managing operations to maintain efficiency and adherence to safety protocols.
