DUBAI: On the morning of April 16, Wednesday, residents of the UAE faced significant visibility reductions due to sandstorms and fog that spread across various parts of the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued multiple alerts to warn of the hazardous weather conditions, with red and orange alerts in place for various regions.

The worst of the visibility reduction was expected between 6.30AM and 9.30AM, as blowing dust and fog combined to create challenging driving conditions, particularly in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Dust storms and fog formation

The NCM’s red alert indicated that horizontal visibility was reduced to less than 1,500 metres in areas such as Dubai International Airport, with the authorities urging motorists to exercise caution.

Electronic signboards on major roads, including the E311, displayed warnings for drivers to reduce speed due to the ongoing sandstorm.

Meanwhile, an orange alert, valid until 10AM, warned of fresh northwesterly winds causing blowing dust and sand, exacerbating visibility issues across the country.

Abu Dhabi police took to social media to urge drivers to remain alert as they navigated the reduced visibility, reminding them to obey fluctuating speed limits displayed on electronic boards. The police also requested that drivers refrain from using their phones or taking videos while driving, in order to avoid distractions.

A spokesperson from Abu Dhabi Police also called for extra caution, noting that foggy weather had affected both internal and coastal areas.

Weather and temperature conditions

Wednesday’s weather forecast from the NCM predicted partly cloudy conditions, with a possibility of dust at times. Winds were expected to be moderate to fresh, contributing to the suspension of dust particles in the air, while humidity levels increased overnight. Temperatures in Abu Dhabi were forecast to range from 25°C to 35°C, and in Dubai, from 28°C to 34°C. Coastal areas experienced a humidity range of 30 to 75 per cent, making for a notably warm and damp atmosphere, particularly early in the morning.

The rough sea conditions, particularly in the Arabian Gulf, also prompted warnings. The sea is expected to remain very rough, with moderate conditions reported in the Oman Sea. Authorities continued to remind residents of the ongoing weather disruptions, advising caution when travelling near coastal roads.

With conditions expected to persist into Thursday, the NCM's forecasts suggest further deterioration in visibility, particularly in dust-prone areas. The situation calls for ongoing vigilance, as sandstorms and fog continue to affect daily life in the region.
