DUBAI: The countdown has begun for the 25th edition of the Dubai Marathon, officially scheduled for 1 February 2026.

Registration is now open for this landmark silver jubilee event, which is backed by the Dubai Sports Council and promises a world-class experience for runners of all levels.

As the oldest international road race in the Middle East, the Dubai Marathon has grown into one of the most prestigious races on the global circuit, attracting elite athletes and amateur runners alike from more than 140 countries.

Elite performances

Recognised globally for its flat and fast course, the marathon has earned Gold Label status from World Athletics. Over the years, it has seen legendary performances from some of the sport’s biggest names. Ethiopian icon Haile Gebrselassie famously ran the second-fastest marathon time in history during his 2008 debut in Dubai.

In recent editions, the Dubai Marathon has served as a launchpad for rising stars. Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola took the crown in 2017 and went on to become Olympic champion. In 2019, Ruth Chepngetich made her marathon debut in Dubai before becoming world champion. Earlier in 2025, Boti Gelemeshu won the men’s race with a time of 2:04:51, while Berdado Hirpa clinched the women’s title in 2:18:27 after a dramatic finish.

Alongside the 42.195 km full marathon, the 2026 edition will include a 10 km road race and a 4 km fun run. These events are designed to make the occasion more inclusive, catering to runners of varying fitness levels and ambitions. Registration for all races is currently open at the official website.

According to Race Director Peter Connerton, preparations for the 25th edition include a series of special events throughout the year, leading up to race day. “The Dubai Marathon has steadily risen to the top tier of global road racing,” Connerton said. “From Gebrselassie’s 2008 record to the extraordinary performances in 2018, where seven runners broke the 2:05 mark, the marathon has consistently delivered unforgettable moments.”

Dubai’s infrastructure plays a pivotal role in the event’s continued success. Ahmed Al Kamali, General Coordinator of the Dubai Marathon, emphasised the city’s readiness: “Dubai offers world-class facilities, advanced transport, and a range of accommodation, making it a premier global sporting destination. The marathon contributes significantly to tourism and international exposure.”
