New tech tackles food waste with impressive compression system at Royal M Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI: The Royal M Hotel Abu Dhabi by Gewan is charting a bold new course in sustainable hospitality.
Through a strategic blend of innovation and responsibility, the hotel is revolutionising its environmental impact – without compromising luxury.
From solar-powered systems to in-house micro-farming, every detail reflects a commitment to a greener future.
Solar energy drive
One of the hotel’s standout initiatives is its shift to a fully solar-powered hot water system. A total of 180 solar panels now generate an impressive 252 kilowatts of heat energy every hour. This move slashes electricity costs by approximately Dh300,000 annually and significantly lowers carbon emissions. The system is designed to supply all hot water needs across the property, cementing Royal M’s role as a regional trailblazer in renewable energy application within the hospitality sector.
Cutting food waste
In tackling food waste, Royal M Abu Dhabi has implemented a high-efficiency food waste compressing system. This advanced machine compresses 25 kilograms of waste into just 5 kilograms, dramatically reducing the volume of material sent to landfills. The result: fewer greenhouse gas emissions, lower disposal costs, and a more sustainable kitchen operation. This effort enhances not only the hotel’s sustainability credentials but also its long-term operational efficiency.
Green gastronomy
Taking culinary sustainability a step further, the hotel has introduced a micro herb farming programme. By growing fresh herbs on-site, Royal M reduces its reliance on external suppliers, cutting down transportation emissions and packaging waste. The herbs are used in the hotel’s gourmet offerings, bringing both freshness and a reduced carbon footprint to every plate.
Entertainment with efficiency
Sustainability at Royal M is not confined to operations – it extends to guest experience. The recently introduced Dh1.5 million Water Laser Show combines energy-efficient laser technology with minimal water usage to deliver stunning visual performances. It stands as a prime example of how eco-conscious choices can enhance, rather than limit, luxury hospitality.
