Dubai: US-based Archer Aviation is set to redefine urban transportation in the UAE with its electric air taxi service. The company has made significant strides toward this goal by delivering its first Midnight aircraft to the US Air Force for evaluation.
While the delivery to the US Air Force highlights the versatility and potential of the Midnight aircraft for military applications, the primary focus for Archer remains the UAE market. The company has already signed a substantial deal with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to establish its international headquarters in the UAE capital and commence air taxi operations next year.
“Within the next 18 to 24 months, you are going to see passengers here in the UAE flying on our aircraft from one point to another,” Nikhil Goel, chief commercial officer of Archer Aviation, told Khaleej Times in an interview in May.
This new mode of air transport will reduce the 60-90 minute travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to just 10-20 minutes with a ride that will cost about Dh800-Dh1,500. Meanwhile, a ride within an emirate will cost approximately Dh350.
Air taxis' impact on urban planning
-
Reduced traffic congestion: Air taxis can alleviate traffic congestion on roads, leading to improved air quality and reduced travel times.
-
Land use optimization: With less reliance on extensive road networks, cities can potentially repurpose land for green spaces, residential, or commercial use.
-
Infrastructure development: The establishment of vertiports (airports for air taxis) will require careful planning and integration into existing urban infrastructure.
Archer's partnership with Abu Dhabi is a strategic move that aligns perfectly with the UAE's vision for a technologically advanced and sustainable future. By establishing its international headquarters and manufacturing operations in the country, Archer aims to create jobs, boost the local economy, and contribute to the UAE's reputation as a global innovation hub.
