Planning a trip from the UAE to the UK? New travel regulations now require certain visitors, including UAE nationals, to secure an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving in the UK.
This policy, part of the UK’s strategy to enhance border security, is mandatory for travellers from visa-exempt countries visiting the UK for short-term stays or transiting through its airports.
Starting from 8th January 2025, nationals of 50 countries, including the UAE, will need an ETA for trips to the UK lasting up to six months. Furthermore, from 2nd April 2025, travellers from EU/EEA nations, Switzerland, and several microstates will also require this authorisation.
Who needs an ETA?
The UK ETA applies to a range of scenarios. You will need one if:
- You’re staying in the UK for less than six months for tourism, business, or family visits.
- You’re transiting through the UK en route to another destination.
- You’re on a paid short-term assignment, such as speaking at a conference.
- You’re travelling on a creative worker visa for up to three months.
Travellers from the UAE who previously enjoyed visa-free access for short stays now need to factor this requirement into their travel plans. However, it’s important to note that the ETA doesn’t replace a visa; those requiring visas for specific purposes, such as work or long-term residency, must apply through the regular channels.
Applying for the UK ETA online
Applying for the UK ETA is straightforward and takes about 20 minutes. Follow these steps:
- Download the UK ETA app from your device’s app store or visit the official UK government website.
- Upload your passport details using a clear photograph.
- Submit a recent photograph of yourself for identification purposes.
- Fill in essential information, including your home address, job details, and travel purpose.
- Pay the application fee of £10 (approximately Dh47).
- Submit your application and wait for a response within three working days.
While processing is quick, travellers are encouraged to apply well in advance to avoid delays or issues.
Validity, costs, and essential tips
Once approved, your ETA will remain valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, you can make multiple entries to the UK, but each visit must not exceed six months.
Here are some tips to ensure a smooth ETA application process:
- Double-check all personal details before submission to avoid errors.
- Use clear and high-quality photos of your passport and yourself.
- Apply as early as possible, especially during peak travel seasons.
What happens when you arrive in UK?
Upon arrival, border officials will verify your ETA alongside other travel documents. Although an ETA simplifies the process, it doesn’t guarantee entry. Travellers must still meet UK entry requirements, and providing false information may result in denied access.
Key exemptions
Some travellers are exempt from needing an ETA. These include:
- British or Irish citizens.
- Individuals with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
- Visitors with a valid UK visa or existing permission to live in the UK.
Activities allowed with an ETA
An ETA grants you permission to engage in specific activities during your UK visit, such as:
- Exploring iconic landmarks like Big Ben and the Tower of London.
- Attending business conferences or professional events.
- Enrolling in short-term training courses.
- Visiting family and friends.
It’s crucial to ensure your plans align with the permitted activities under the ETA to avoid complications.
