Have you ever received a sales call from a personal number, leaving you frustrated and wondering how they got your details?

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), such practices are not only intrusive but also illegal, thanks to strict telemarketing regulations enforced since August 2024.

Here’s how you can take action to protect your privacy.

Steps to report unwanted calls

If you receive a marketing call from a personal mobile number, reporting it is simple:

  • Open your messaging app.
  • Type Report 05XXXXXXXX, replacing ‘05XXXXXXXX’ with the caller’s number.
  • Send the message to 1012.

This process notifies the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), the body overseeing telemarketing compliance.

Telemarketing rules and penalties

The UAE’s regulations prohibit businesses or individuals from using personal mobile numbers for promotional calls. Only numbers registered under a company’s commercial licence may be used for telemarketing purposes.

Violators face severe penalties:

  • Dh75,000 fine for using unregistered numbers.
  • Dh5,000 fine and disconnection of services for a first offence involving personal numbers.
  • Repeat offenders may incur fines up to Dh50,000 and a potential ban on telecom services.

These measures underline the UAE’s dedication to safeguarding residents from unsolicited calls.

How the Kashif feature protects you

To further protect residents, the Kashif feature, launched by TDRA in 2022, displays the caller’s business name on your screen. This helps you identify legitimate calls and avoid unknown or misleading numbers.

All businesses are required to activate Kashif for customer communications, ensuring compliance with TDRA regulations.

Stay informed, stay protected

By promptly reporting unauthorised calls, you contribute to a safer and more transparent communication environment in the UAE.
