Saudi Arabia: Electric hydrofoil ships to speed up Red Sea travel
NEOM's historic deal introduces the world’s first zero-emission ships for sustainable water travel
Dubai: In a game-changing move for maritime transport, Candela Technology AB has announced a major contract to deploy eight of its pioneering Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ships in NEOM, the visionary sustainable city emerging in Northwest Saudi Arabia.
This unprecedented deal marks the largest order in Candela’s history, introducing the world’s first electric hydrofoil vessels to a new water network.
Revolutionizing water travel with zero emissions
Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela shared his excitement: "The P-12 is designed to revolutionize water transport with zero emissions and unparalleled efficiency compared to traditional ferries.”
The Candela P-12, which debuted last year, is designed to be both faster and more energy-efficient than its predecessors. This smaller, high-speed vessel promises more frequent and quicker journeys, enhancing convenience for passengers.
Soaring above the waves - cutting-edge technology
Equipped with advanced hydrofoil technology, the P-12 glides effortlessly above the water on computer-guided underwater wings, using 80% less energy than conventional ships. It boasts an impressive top speed of 25 knots and a range exceeding two hours.
The ship’s sophisticated digital flight control system ensures a smooth ride by adjusting the hydrofoils 100 times per second, providing stability even in rough conditions.
A Green revolution - major environmental benefits
The P-12’s energy efficiency is a game-changer for reducing environmental impact. By using 80% less energy, it achieves a 97.5% reduction in CO2 emissions over its lifespan compared to diesel-powered vessels.
Additionally, the electric C-POD motors operate silently, minimizing disruption to marine life and allowing for faster travel without the large wakes that traditional ships create.
What’s next?
The first eight P-12 vessels are set to arrive between 2025 and early 2026. Candela, headquartered in Stockholm, is a trailblazer in hydrofoiling electric vessels, with a strong track record since its founding in 2014. The company’s previous models, including the C-7 and C-8, have received widespread acclaim for their performance and efficiency.
Candela’s vision for the future
With over 200 engineers and a commitment to in-house development, Candela is at the forefront of transforming water transport. The launch of the Candela P-12 Shuttle ferry is a testament to the company’s dedication to creating sustainable and efficient maritime solutions.
