Dubai: Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has taken a significant step towards improving the lives of its delivery riders by completing the construction of 20 air-conditioned rest areas across the city. This initiative is part of a larger plan to build a total of 40 such facilities, aiming to enhance road safety, boost rider well-being, and reduce the risk of accidents.
A Strategic approach
This strategic approach ensures that the facilities are situated where they are most needed. As of June 2024, Dubai boasted an impressive 2,535 delivery service companies operating a fleet of 40,088 motorcycles, underscoring the critical role these riders play in the city's bustling economy.
Locations of rest areas were selected based on operational data analysis, focusing on areas with the highest demand for delivery services.
Rest Area Locations
To provide a better overview, here are the specific locations where RTA has constructed air-conditioned rest areas for delivery riders:
-
Major Roads: Hessa Street, Al Wasl Road
-
Residential Areas: Al Barsha, Al Karama, Umm Suqeim, The Greens, Al Rashdiya, Al Satwa, Nad Al Hamar, Al Nahda, Oud Metha, Arabian Ranches, International City, Business Bay, Dubai Marina, Al Jaddaf, Mirdif
-
Commercial Areas: Dubai World Trade Centre, Al Garhoud, Dubai Motor City
-
Other: Riggat Al Buteen, Last Exit Al Khawaneej
More than just a rest stop
Each air-conditioned rest area is designed with the rider's comfort in mind. In addition to providing a cool and relaxing space, these facilities offer essential amenities such as snack vending machines, water dispensers, and mobile phone charging stations.
With a capacity of up to 10 people, these rest stops are becoming vital hubs for riders to recharge and refresh during their busy shifts.
A commitment to safety
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the authority's dedication to creating a safe environment for all road users. The rest areas are a key component of Dubai's Traffic Safety Strategy, which aims to achieve a "Zero Fatalities" vision and solidify the city's position as a global leader in traffic safety.
Recognizing and rewarding excellence
RTA's commitment to the delivery sector extends beyond infrastructure. The authority launched the Delivery Service Excellence Award in 2022 to recognize and reward outstanding companies and drivers. This initiative promotes competition, encourages adherence to traffic regulations, and elevates the overall quality of delivery services in Dubai.
By investing in the well-being of delivery riders and fostering a culture of excellence, RTA is demonstrating its commitment to creating a safer, more efficient, and more comfortable city for everyone.
