Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed a series of rapid enhancements on Sheikh Zayed Road, aimed at reducing congestion, increasing capacity, and optimising traffic flow.
These upgrades align with Dubai’s ongoing urban expansion and reinforce Sheikh Zayed Road’s role as a vital economic and commuter corridor.
The enhancements focus on key sections of the road, which serves major commercial and residential hubs, including Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Mall.
By improving road efficiency and safety, RTA aims to facilitate smoother daily commutes and support Dubai’s long-term infrastructure goals.
Service road expansion
Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, highlighted the expansion of the service road near Financial Centre Metro Station in the Abu Dhabi-bound direction. The project increased the number of lanes from three to four, boosting road capacity by 25 percent. This upgrade now accommodates up to 3,200 vehicles per hour, a significant rise from the previous 2,400.
The expansion has also reduced congestion at the entrance, eliminating vehicle queues and improving overall traffic flow. As a result, motorists now experience a reduced journey time of just two minutes—down from five minutes—along this critical stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road.
Improved traffic merging
RTA has also optimised the merging distance between Al Khail Road and Financial Centre Street in the Dubai-bound direction. Extending the merging zone has eased congestion and enhanced service levels, leading to a 25 percent reduction in travel time. Motorists now complete this section in three minutes instead of four, ensuring a more seamless driving experience.
These enhancements are part of RTA’s broader strategy to deploy innovative traffic solutions, ensuring Sheikh Zayed Road remains an efficient and safe transport artery as Dubai continues to grow.
