Toronto: All Canadian designated learning institutions must verify the authenticity of each student's admission letter with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, within ten days of admission confirmation.  Educational institutions failing to monitor student enrolments effectively now face potential suspension of new study permit processing.

In response to rising concerns about international students misusing study permits, Canada is rolling out stringent measures to tighten oversight.

Additionally, students switching schools must now obtain a new study permit before starting their new program.

Consequences of non-compliance

Non-compliant institutions risk public listing and suspension from accepting new international students for up to a year.

Prospective students are urged to carefully vet institutions to ensure compliance with these new monitoring standards before applying for study permits

Surge in study permit holders

Last year,  Canada welcomed a record number of over one million study permit holders, marking a significant 151% increase since 2015.

This surge underscores the necessity for revised visa policies, as highlighted by Immigration Minister Marc Miller's concerns over exploitative practices by certain private institutions, including high fees and inadequate support services.

Desired objective

With these reforms estimated to cost $87 million over a decade, Canada remains committed to ensuring fair treatment and a supportive environment for international students.
