Dawood Sharif, Special to TravelsDubai
Every traveller dreams of finding a place where nature’s beauty is so overwhelming that it leaves you spellbound. For me and my friends – Khurram, Imran, Kanan, and Atique – that place was Skardu, nestled in the stunning region of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Our adventure began in the glitzy modernity of Dubai and took us to this serene, breathtaking land, a journey that exceeded all our expectations.
A welcome like no other
From the moment we touched down in Skardu, we were enchanted. The first thing that struck us was the crisp, fresh mountain air – a sharp contrast to Dubai’s arid heat. Surrounded by towering peaks and lush valleys, Skardu immediately felt like a haven. This wasn’t just a change of scenery; it was an entirely different world.
The roads leading to our destination were as picturesque as any postcard, with snow-capped mountains, glacial rivers, and terraced fields stretching endlessly. It felt like nature was rolling out a red carpet just for us.
The mirror-like Kachura Lakes
Our first stop was the legendary Kachura Lakes. Upper Kachura Lake, hidden amidst rugged terrain, was like a secret unveiled. The lake's clear blue waters reflected the surrounding peaks and skies so perfectly that it was hard to tell where the lake ended and the heavens began. There was an unmatched tranquillity – a quiet that allowed us to connect with nature and each other on a deeper level.
Just a short distance away, Lower Kachura Lake, home to the famous Shangrila Resort, offered a completely different vibe. Known as "Heaven on Earth," the resort lived up to its name. Imagine quaint, traditional Balti-style cottages encircling a serene lake, with wildflowers and greenery enhancing the dreamlike setting. We spent hours soaking in the beauty, taking pictures, and simply savouring the peace of this idyllic spot.
A symphony of Waterfalls and History
Our journey continued to the awe-inspiring Manthoka Waterfall, a cascading marvel that seemed to emerge straight out of a painter’s imagination. The thunderous roar of the water tumbling down against a backdrop of jagged rocks created a sense of both power and serenity. It was impossible to resist the urge to pause and marvel at nature’s raw beauty.
History enthusiasts among us were captivated by Khaplu Fort, a regal structure that spoke of the region's rich heritage. Wandering through its well-preserved halls and courtyards felt like stepping back in time, giving us a glimpse of the grandeur of the Balti culture.
Deosai: The Land of Giants
One of the most unforgettable experiences was visiting Deosai National Park, often called the "Land of Giants." Stretching as far as the eye could see, the plains were a blend of lush greenery, vibrant wildflowers, and roaming wildlife. At over 4,000 metres above sea level, the vastness of Deosai had an almost otherworldly feel. It was a humbling reminder of how small we are in the face of nature’s vastness.
A journey to remember
Skardu wasn’t just a feast for the eyes; it was nourishment for the soul. Sharing this magical journey with friends made it even more special. Every laugh, every shared meal, and every moment of awe brought us closer together.
As we said our goodbyes to Skardu and began our journey back to Dubai, we carried with us not just photographs but a deep sense of gratitude. This wasn’t just a holiday; it was an experience that reminded us of the boundless beauty of our world and the joy of discovering it with loved ones.
