Lahore: As excitement builds for the October 2, 2024, release of The Legend of Maula Jatt in India, the record-breaking Pakistani film is already facing political opposition. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), an Indian political party led by Raj Thackeray, has threatened to block the film’s release across the country.

According to The Times of India, Ameya Khopkar, a politician and producer affiliated with MNS, vowed that no Pakistani films would be permitted in India, stating, "We will not allow the release of Pakistani films, nor will we allow their artists to work in Indian films."

MNS opposition to cross-border cinema

Expanding on his stance, Khopkar criticised the involvement of an Indian company in distributing the film, adding, "It is most infuriating that an Indian company is leading this plan. Following Raj Saheb's orders, we will not let this film release anywhere in India."

The MNS has previously been vocal against cultural exchanges with Pakistan, and their opposition could create significant challenges for The Legend of Maula Jatt's debut in Indian theatres.

Fan excitement remains high

The movie, produced by Ammara Hikmat and directed by Bilal Lashari, represents a significant milestone in Pakistani cinema, grossing over Rs400 crore globally and becoming the highest-grossing Pakistani film in history.

The confirmation of its Indian release was initially seen as a breakthrough moment for cross-border cultural exchange.

Whether the MNS will succeed in halting the release remains to be seen, but the anticipation for The Legend of Maula Jatt continues to grow, especially given its star-studded cast and critical acclaim.

The film’s journey to Indian cinemas, much like its success story, is turning out to be as dramatic as the film itself.
