Dubai witnessed a dazzling dose of cross-border cinema magic over the weekend as the music launch for Abir Gulaal, a forthcoming Bollywood romantic comedy, lit up Global Village.

Pakistani superstar Fawad Khan and Indian actress Vaani Kapoor graced the Main Stage, along with music director Amit Trivedi, in a high-energy event that brought fans, influencers, and press together for a night to remember.

The event marked Fawad Khan’s much-anticipated return to Bollywood after nearly a decade, with Abir Gulaal slated for release in UAE cinemas on May 9. The actor, known for his critically acclaimed roles in Kapoor & Sons, Khoobsurat, and Pakistan’s highest-grossing film The Legend of Maula Jatt, is making a comeback that fans are clearly excited about.

Fawad Khan, Vaani Kapoor in Dubai

During a pre-launch press conference in Dubai earlier that afternoon, Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor charmed a packed room of local media and influencers. The crowd’s reaction to Fawad’s every move made it evident that his star power is as magnetic as ever. Whistles and cheers erupted even before he spoke, with one emcee quipping that Khan could simply say “tamatar and pyaaz” and still bring the house down.

Yet, the actor remained composed and humorous throughout, even acknowledging the objectification with poise. “As long as they’re also seeing the body of work, I’m okay with it,” he said, flashing his signature smile. The audience responded with thunderous applause.

Kapoor, who has starred in hits like War, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, and Befikre, brought her own grounded charm to the stage. “This film brings a flavour of realism,” she explained. “It’s not too dramatic, but it’s fun – just them being themselves.”

The film, shot in London, offers a refreshing take on modern romance. “Everything now is very dark, very dramatic,” Fawad added. “This is like comfort food. A few flavours. Easy to digest.”

Magic on stage

As night fell, Global Village transformed into a Bollywood spectacle. Thousands gathered at the iconic venue’s Main Stage to witness the official music launch. Amit Trivedi kicked off the musical segment with live renditions from the Abir Gulaal soundtrack, setting the tone for the electric atmosphere.

But the highlight of the evening came when Fawad and Vaani took to the stage. The duo danced to Khudaya Ishq, their on-screen chemistry leaving fans in awe. Fawad surprised the audience by singing the romantic number Kuch Naa Kaho, accompanied by teaser visuals from the film flashing on large screens behind him. The crowd roared as he hit the final note – a moment that quickly went viral on social media.

The stars’ onstage camaraderie was evident, from spontaneous dance steps to playful exchanges. “The biggest mystery to me,” Fawad joked, “is how actresses like Vaani wear those thin saris in the cold and don’t shiver!” Laughter echoed through the venue, with Kapoor joining in on the fun.

Cinema without borders

Beyond the glitz and glamour, Abir Gulaal also marks a significant cultural moment. Fawad’s return to Indian cinema comes after years of political tension. Following a 2016 ban on Pakistani artistes in India, his Bollywood career came to a halt despite previous successes. However, a 2023 Bombay High Court decision dismissed petitions seeking to extend that ban, paving the way for a new chapter.

For now, though, the focus is on celebration. As Fawad put it, “Dubai is one of the most hospitable cities – not just for its buildings, but because the people here have a lot of heart.”

With that, the stars exited the stage, but not before leaving the Dubai audience swooning, swaying, and dreaming of May 9 – when Abir Gulaal finally hits the big screen.
