DUBAI: His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation, witnessed the launch of Dubai’s first PhD programme in Artificial Intelligence today.

The announcement was made by the University of Birmingham Dubai during the ongoing Dubai AI Week 2025.

The initiative marks a pivotal step in aligning academic innovation with the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. The Crown Prince highlighted the vital role of academia in driving future readiness, stating that educational institutions are instrumental in preparing the next generation of innovators.

PhD programme in AI

The new PhD programme aims to cultivate specialised talent in emerging AI domains such as smart city infrastructure, next-generation healthcare, environmental sustainability, and future mobility systems. These are critical sectors underpinning Dubai’s digital transformation.

The event was also attended by Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, and Deputy Managing Director of the Dubai Future Foundation.

Accredited and advanced

Fully accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education’s Commission for Academic Accreditation, the programme reflects the nation’s commitment to quality academic standards. Students will have access to cutting-edge AI labs, incubators, and collaboration opportunities through government-led innovation initiatives.

The curriculum spans AI for healthcare, computer vision, natural language processing, AI regulation and ethics, and the development of explainable and trustworthy AI. With tailored supervision and research-based learning, the doctorate offers comprehensive academic and practical training.

Regional innovation drive

Developed in partnership with the UAE National Program for Artificial Intelligence, the initiative is a cornerstone of the country’s broader strategy to empower future generations with technological expertise.

Dubai AI Week 2025, running from 21st to 25th April, is organised by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The event brings together global experts, entrepreneurs, regulators, and innovators to accelerate responsible AI development worldwide.
