Dubai Press Club launches revamped Ibda'a Arab Youth Media Award 2025
Submissions open to media students with $5,000 cash prize for winners
DUBAI: The Dubai Press Club (DPC) has launched the ninth edition of the ‘Ibda’a – Arab Youth Media Award’, inviting submissions from media students across the Arab world.
Under the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and patronage of Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Media Council, the award has returned in a refreshed format.
Originally introduced in 2001, the Ibda’a Media Student Awards aimed to identify and honour young media talents across the region. Its revival seeks to re-ignite creativity and foster innovation among the next generation of Arab media professionals.
Award categories unveiled
Mona Al Marri, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of the Dubai Media Council, and President of the Dubai Press Club, said the award’s relaunch aligns with Sheikh Mohammed’s vision of nurturing exceptional media talent. “The award inspires young professionals to excel in their studies and future careers while promoting innovation and progress in Arab media,” she emphasised.
This year’s revamped edition includes six cutting-edge categories: Podcasting, E-Games, Multimedia, Photography, Short Video, and News Reports. Participants can submit entries individually or in groups through universities or directly, provided their submissions meet the award’s eligibility criteria.
Special focus on innovation
Jasim Al Shemsi, Member of the Organising Committee, highlighted how the award reflects advancements in media over the last two decades. “Arab universities and media faculties are actively encouraging their students to prepare innovative submissions. Our aim is to promote creativity and provide a platform for young talent to shine,” Al Shemsi said. Submissions can be made via an online portal, ensuring a seamless application process.
Amna Khalil, another member of the Organising Committee, noted the strategic importance of the initiative. “The Ibda’a Award is a cornerstone for empowering young Arab media talent and preparing them to tackle the challenges of tomorrow’s media industry,” she said.
Evaluation and recognition
A panel of seasoned media professionals will assess entries, ensuring transparency and fairness. Each category carries a substantial cash prize of $5,000. All submissions must be original, free of promotional material, and presented in either Arabic or English. Additionally, participants retain intellectual property rights for their work, although the Organising Committee reserves the right to use entries for promotional purposes.
Arab Youth Media Forum
The winners will be honoured during a prestigious ceremony as part of the Arab Youth Media Forum. This annual gathering brings together media professionals, thought leaders, and students to discuss the future of the industry. The event underscores Dubai’s commitment to fostering innovation and creativity in Arab media.
A legacy of excellence
The award’s revival after 16 years underscores Dubai’s ambition to lead in media innovation. By providing young professionals with opportunities to showcase their talent, the initiative aligns with the city’s broader vision of being a global media hub. As Mona Al Marri put it, “Today’s media industry thrives on fresh ideas and diverse perspectives. This award ensures that Arab youth have the tools and platforms to contribute meaningfully.”
