Dubai is poised to cement its status as a global hub for mixed martial arts (MMA) with the announcement of a groundbreaking partnership between the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), Dubai Sports Council (DSC), and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).

This multi-year agreement will bring world-class MMA events to the city, kicking off with the Champions Series World Title event on Saturday, 25 January 2025, at the Coca-Cola Arena.

Nurmagomedov vs Hughes

The headline bout features Dagestan's Usman Nurmagomedov (18-0), the undefeated Bellator Lightweight World Champion, defending his title against Ireland’s rising star Paul Hughes (13-1). Hughes, fresh off a career-defining win at the PFL’s Battle of the Giants, is set to challenge Nurmagomedov in what promises to be an electrifying contest.

Nurmagomedov shared his excitement, stating: “I’m proud to be the first MMA main event in Dubai history.” Similarly, Hughes expressed confidence: “I know I will leave Dubai on January 25 as the new champion.”

Road to Dubai

Under this partnership, all PFL Champions Series events will now be branded as “Road to Dubai,” culminating in high-stakes finales in the emirate. The initiative aligns with Dubai’s ambition to become a global sports destination, furthering its reputation as a host of elite international events.

According to Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, the collaboration underscores Dubai’s commitment to “providing incredible experiences for both athletes and fans,” while showcasing its “energy, diversity, and exceptional hospitality.”

UAE fighters in the spotlight

A crucial component of this partnership is the focus on nurturing Emirati talent. The initiative provides young UAE fighters with a pathway to compete at the highest levels, with the potential to become future PFL champions.

Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council, described this endeavour as “the beginning of creating a new generation of champions in sports who will raise the UAE’s flag in various international forums.”

The initiative focuses on developing Emirati MMA talent, providing training and opportunities for local fighters to compete internationally and represent the UAE.

PFL: Redefining MMA

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) distinguishes itself with a sports-season format, featuring a regular season, playoffs, and a championship. It boasts a roster where 30% of fighters are independently ranked among the top 25 globally, rivaling the UFC.

PFL CEO Pete Murray commented: “We are excited to partner with Dubai to stage annual mega events and develop the next generation of UAE champion fighters.”

This partnership is a testament to Dubai’s strategic vision as part of its Economic Agenda, D33, which aims to double the size of the emirate's economy and enhance its position as a premier global destination for business and leisure. The Road to Dubai initiative is expected to bolster sports tourism and attract global attention.

Al Khaja added: “This action-packed series will keep our city at the forefront of combat sports, helping to attract visitors from around the world.”
