Colombo:  Sri Lanka has announced the introduction of a visa-free access facility for residents of 35 different countries of the world, including India. The change is set to take effect from October 1, 2024, and will be implemented for six months.

The impact on tourism

This strategic move is expected to have a profound impact on the tourism industry in Sri Lanka, particularly given India's substantial population and growing appetite for international travel. By eliminating the visa requirement, Sri Lanka aims to make it easier and more convenient for Indian travellers to explore the island's diverse attractions, from ancient ruins to pristine beaches and lush rainforests.

Visa-free entry reach

The visa-free policy is not limited to India alone. Sri Lanka has extended this privilege to a total of 35 countries, including several other Asian, European, and American nations. This move is a testament to Sri Lanka's commitment to promoting international tourism, fostering stronger diplomatic ties, and boosting the economy.

People from India, China, Japan, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia get tourist visas in Sri Lanka without any fee.

Strengthening Indo-Lankan ties

The decision to offer visa-free entry to Indian citizens is particularly significant considering the close historical and cultural ties between the two countries. Sri Lanka has long been a popular destination for Indian tourists seeking a blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. The new visa policy is expected to further strengthen these bonds and encourage more Indians to visit Sri Lanka.
