Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a Dh798 million contract for the Al Qudra Street Development Project under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, and the supervision of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai.
The project is designed to improve mobility, alleviate congestion, and support Dubai’s growing urban infrastructure.
It will significantly cut travel time on Al Qudra Street from 9.4 minutes to just 2.8 minutes while increasing road capacity and enhancing safety measures.
Al Qudra Street Development Project
The development spans 11.6 kilometres, stretching from the intersection of Al Qudra Street with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street to Emirates Road. It involves the construction of multiple bridges covering 2,700 metres, alongside upgrades to key intersections to ensure seamless traffic movement.
Al Qudra Street is a vital corridor serving residential and development areas with an estimated population of 400,000. The project aims to optimise connectivity between growing communities such as Arabian Ranches 1 and 2, Dubai Motor City, Dubai Studio City, DAMAC Hills, The Sustainable City, and Akoya.
Strategic network enhancement
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, highlighted the project’s importance in strengthening Dubai’s East-West road network.
“This development will enhance road capacity, reduce congestion at critical intersections, and facilitate direct connectivity to key destinations, including Al Qudra City,” Al Tayer stated.
Intersection upgrades
One of the major enhancements includes upgrading the intersection of Al Qudra Street with the connecting road between Arabian Ranches and Dubai Studio City. A 600-metre bridge, featuring four lanes in each direction, will be built to increase traffic capacity from 6,600 to 19,200 vehicles per hour. The waiting time at this intersection will drop from 113 seconds to 52 seconds, ensuring a smoother traffic flow.
Another significant development is the upgrade of the intersection with Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street. A 700-metre bridge with seven lanes in both directions will be constructed, along with auxiliary lanes for side ramps, allowing seamless transitions without traffic disruptions.
New bridges for traffic flow
To further enhance connectivity, a 500-metre bridge will facilitate traffic movement from Al Qudra Street to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street towards Jebel Ali. Additionally, a 900-metre bridge will serve vehicles heading towards Downtown Dubai and Dubai International Airport, providing faster and more efficient routes.
Service roads
The project also includes three kilometres of service roads along Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, improving access to surrounding development projects. These upgrades will expand road capacity from 7,800 to 19,400 vehicles per hour while reducing waiting times at the second intersection from 393 seconds to 60 seconds.
Future expansion plans
Al Tayer further detailed the expansion of Al Qudra Street from Emirates Road to a key roundabout serving areas like Town Square, Mira, and DAMAC Hills 2. This 3.4-kilometre stretch will see an increase in lanes to improve traffic movement.
A future phase will extend the road by an additional 4.8 kilometres, linking it directly to Emirates Road. Further enhancements include widening lanes on both sides of Emirates Road over a 4.8-kilometre stretch, reinforcing Dubai’s commitment to seamless and efficient transport networks.
