DUBAI: Ramadan is a time of spiritual discipline, self-restraint, and devotion. As Muslims worldwide prepare for the holy month, many wonder what is permissible while fasting.

One common question that arises is whether smoking or vaping breaks the fast. While some believe electronic cigarettes do not impact fasting, religious scholars and medical experts strongly disagree.

So, does inhaling nicotine or vaporised chemicals invalidate the fast? Here’s what you need to know!

What does Dubai’s Grand Mufti say?

Dr Ahmad bin Abdul Aziz Al-Haddad, Grand Mufti of Dubai and Director of the Fatwa Department, has clarified that vaping is no different from traditional smoking when it comes to fasting. "Inhaling smoke, whether from cigarettes or vapes, introduces substances into the body and invalidates the fast," he told Gulf News.

Additionally, he pointed out that since vaping contains harmful chemicals, it is not only impermissible during fasting but is also considered haram (forbidden) in Islam.

Are nicotine patches allowed?

Unlike smoking and vaping, nicotine patches do not introduce smoke or chemicals into the digestive system. Scholars confirm that since they do not involve direct consumption, nicotine patches are permissible during fasting hours.

What do medical experts say about vaping?

Medical experts emphasise that vaping is not a safer alternative to smoking. Despite common misconceptions, vaping products contain harmful chemicals, which can contribute to chronic lung damage and increase the risk of cancer.

Health professionals recommend quitting smoking through safer methods such as nicotine patches or behavioral therapy, especially during Ramadan when fasting can provide an added incentive to quit.

Why does smoking invalidate fasting?

Islamic teachings emphasise that fasting is not just about avoiding food and drink but also about abstaining from anything that enters the body. Scholars unanimously agree that inhaling cigarette smoke or vapor delivers particles into the system, thus breaking the fast.

Beyond fasting concerns, many scholars also classify smoking as haram (forbidden) due to its proven health risks.

Can Ramadan help you quit smoking?

For many, Ramadan serves as the perfect opportunity to quit smoking altogether. The discipline required to abstain from food and drink can also help break nicotine dependence.

Medical experts suggest that individuals struggling with cravings should seek support from their community, avoid triggers, and stay engaged in spiritual activities. Public health campaigns in several Muslim-majority countries also use Ramadan as a time to encourage smoking cessation, promoting healthier lifestyles beyond the holy month.
