Dubai:  In response to Dubai's recent launch of a comprehensive Dh105 million mental health framework, schools across the Emirates are gearing up to implement innovative initiatives aimed at bolstering student well-being. One notable initiative is the introduction of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for senior students.

According to the MHFA website, the course teaches how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps in identifying, understanding, and responding to signs of addictions and mental illnesses.

MHFA is an internationally recognized program designed to provide initial support for mental health issues. This initiative mirrors the effectiveness of physical first-aid training in addressing immediate health concerns.

Educational framework and support

Under Dubai's Mental Health Framework, schools will enhance their educational environments by equipping staff and parents with tools to enhance students' psychological well-being. This includes integrating health education into curricula and training staff to identify and address mental health issues promptly.

Expert insights

Wellness experts emphasize that implementing MHFA in schools fosters a safer, more supportive environment where students can thrive academically and emotionally. The framework aims to prioritize mental and emotional well-being across school communities.

Future directions

Dubai's mental health initiative also focuses on promoting research and innovation, ensuring ongoing measurement of psychological and community stability. Dubai South is already integrating comprehensive well-being programs aligned with international best practices.

As Dubai refines strategies to support mental health, schools are poised to play a pivotal role in ensuring students and the wider community benefit from a supportive and nurturing environment. The implementation of MHFA training for senior students represents a significant step towards achieving these goals.
