Abu Dhabi: Travellers to the UAE are now required to declare any cash, gold, or precious stones exceeding Dh60,000 upon arrival or departure.
Failure to do so can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines. The UAE government has introduced a new electronic system to simplify the declaration process. The stricter measures aim to combat money laundering and ensure the smooth flow of funds through the country.
New electronic system for declaration
To streamline the declaration process, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has introduced an electronic system called "Afsah." This system allows travelers to easily declare amounts exceeding the Dh60,000 limit. Each adult traveler can carry up to Dh60,000 without declaration, but any amount above this threshold must be reported.
Reasons behind the strict measures
The UAE government has implemented these strict measures to:
-
Increase awareness about the importance of declaring cash and valuables.
-
Prevent customs duty evasion.
-
Combat money laundering and ensure the transparency of funds.
-
Facilitate smooth and secure travel for passengers.
Severe penalties for violations
Travellers caught violating the declaration rules face severe consequences. Customs fines will be imposed, and violators will be referred to law enforcement authorities. Under Federal Law No. (20) of 2018, those convicted of money laundering or concealing funds can face up to three months in prison and a fine of at least Dh50,000.
Ensuring safe and smooth travel
The UAE's efforts to enforce cash declarations are aimed at safeguarding travelers and their belongings while also upholding international standards against financial crimes. By complying with these regulations, travelers can ensure a hassle-free journey through the country's borders.
