DUBAI: The Indian Consulate in Dubai has announced new measures to regulate the repatriation of mortal remains of deceased Indian expatriates, aiming to counter exploitative practices by unauthorised agents.

In a statement, the Consulate revealed cases of agents overcharging grieving families for repatriation services, with fees often exceeding consulate-approved rates.

"We request diaspora to be aware of fraudulent agents who charge exorbitant amounts in place of Consulate-approved rates," the advisory read.

To support families during these challenging times, the Consulate has partnered with community associations across the Emirates. These organisations provide repatriation assistance free of charge.

“This initiative ensures grieving families are not subjected to additional financial burdens while navigating an already difficult process,” stated the advisory.

Only individuals authorised by the immediate family members of the deceased will now be allowed to manage repatriation if the family members cannot be present.

Round-the-clock support

The Consulate has also set up a dedicated 24/7 helpline to assist families. For immediate guidance and facilitation, families can contact:

  • 050-7347676
  • 800 46342

Preventing misuse of repatriation services

The advisory highlighted the importance of vigilance among the Indian expat community. "We are fully committed to providing access and facilitation to grieving families and persons duly authorised by the immediate family members of the deceased person," it stated.

The new measures are expected to prevent agents from exploiting bereaved families and ensure repatriation remains accessible, transparent, and respectful.

By taking these steps, the Consulate aims to safeguard the dignity of deceased Indian expatriates and alleviate the distress of their families during their most vulnerable moments.
