The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi is making strides towards building a cyclist-friendly city. As part of its ongoing mission to enhance urban mobility, the department has announced the construction of new pedestrian and bicycle pathways across Abu Dhabi Island.
This ambitious project aims to extend cycling infrastructure to 1,270 km, fostering an eco-friendly, active lifestyle for residents and visitors.
Construction is already underway on key streets, including Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street, First Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street, and Saeed Bin Ahmed Al Otaiba Street. These additions aim to connect communities and encourage family-friendly activities like cycling.
Safety first!
DMT’s initiative prioritises safety by coordinating with Abu Dhabi Police and other agencies. The pathways are designed with protective measures to ensure a secure experience for riders of all ages and skill levels. From beginners to seasoned cyclists, the new infrastructure promises to offer a safe and enjoyable environment.
Sustainability and fitness
By investing in a widespread cycling network, Abu Dhabi seeks to reduce reliance on cars, promote sustainability, and improve the overall quality of life. The pathways have also encouraged families to cycle together, furthering the culture of fitness and recreation.
