ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA) has partnered with US-based Archer Aviation to deploy the world’s first fleet of Midnight electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The initiative, part of Archer’s ‘Launch Edition’ programme, is set to roll out this year in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
ADA and Archer’s collaboration is a major step in the UAE’s vision for sustainable urban air mobility. The agreement includes establishing a framework to commercialise Midnight aircraft across multiple early-adopter markets, with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) overseeing safety measures.
The Midnight eVTOL is designed to transform regional travel by reducing 60-90 minute car commutes to just 10-20 minutes. With a piloted four-passenger capacity, the aircraft supports back-to-back flights with minimal recharge times.
ADA Chairman Nader Al Hammadi expressed confidence in the technology, stating, “As the largest helicopter operator in the Middle East, we have been closely monitoring eVTOL advancements. Partnering with Archer marks a new era for aviation in the region.”
First deployment in UAE
ADA is the first official customer of Archer’s Launch Edition programme. The company has committed funding for the Midnight fleet, with plans to integrate the aircraft into regional transportation networks. Archer will support ADA with trained pilots, engineers, and technicians to ensure seamless operations.
Archer CEO and founder Adam Goldstein highlighted the significance of this deployment. “This is how we take Midnight from the manufacturing line to our first customers. We will use this playbook as we expand globally. Abu Dhabi Aviation’s commitment to innovation is a game changer for the sector.”
The project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader investment in smart transport solutions, reinforcing its position as a leader in advanced mobility infrastructure.
How much will it cost?
The agreement also includes software integration for air taxi bookings and operational management. Archer aims to provide a dedicated application for seamless passenger scheduling.
As per current estimates, fares for the Midnight air taxis could range between Dh800 and Dh1,500 per ride, making them a premium but time-saving alternative to conventional travel.
Beyond Abu Dhabi, Dubai is also advancing its air mobility plans. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has a separate partnership with Joby Aviation, targeting a 2026 launch for its own air taxi services. Meanwhile, the newly approved Dubai International Vertiport (DXV) is set to accommodate eVTOL aircraft, with the capacity to serve 170,000 passengers annually.
