DUBAI: Sharjah’s border crossings are bracing for a major influx of over 150,000 travellers during the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, with authorities ramping up operational readiness to ensure smooth entry and exit procedures.

The Organisational Committee of Ports and Border Points in Sharjah convened its third periodic meeting for 2025 to review measures aimed at managing the surge efficiently.

Officials confirmed plans to expand passport control capacity, streamline procedures, and implement security protocols in collaboration with key authorities.

Operational readiness

Chaired by Mohammed Ibrahim Al Raisi, Director of Ports and Border Points Affairs, the high-level meeting brought together representatives from Sharjah Police, the National Guard, the General Administration of Customs and Border Security, and the UAE’s State Security Department. Discussions centred on optimising workflow at key border crossings, particularly Khatm Milaha, Dibba Al-Hisn, and Al-Madam, in line with global best practices.

The Committee assessed current performance indicators and the progress of development projects aimed at enhancing border operations. Officials stressed the importance of cross-agency coordination to maintain efficiency while upholding stringent security and customs regulations.

Eid expansion plans

To accommodate the anticipated surge, six additional lanes will be introduced at Khatm Milaha Border Point’s Passport Control Center ahead of the holiday period. The expansion will increase the number of entry lanes to 14, significantly boosting passenger processing capacity and minimising delays. Authorities highlighted that this measure aligns with Sharjah’s broader strategy of ensuring seamless travel experiences, particularly during peak holiday seasons.

Efforts are also underway to reinforce security and implement preventive measures to safeguard both travellers and border personnel. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining high service standards while expediting the movement of passengers through the emirate’s land crossings.

Strategic coordination

The meeting underscored the role of inter-agency collaboration in managing high travel volumes effectively. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Raisi emphasised the Committee’s dedication to strengthening operational frameworks and ensuring border crossings meet international standards. He reiterated the importance of security, customs, and immigration protocols in maintaining smooth operations, particularly during high-traffic periods.
