In a groundbreaking move to inspire fitness and wellness across the Emirate, Active Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Emirates Foundation and PureHealth, has announced a new initiative aimed at promoting health and fitness across Abu Dhabi.
Walk 1000, a unique 30-day walking challenge, aims to inspire thousands to get active, improve their health, and foster a sense of community among residents.
This isn’t just any walk. Walk 1000 is a meticulously planned 1,000-kilometre journey traversing the stunning landscapes of Abu Dhabi. Starting on November 1st, participants will cover a path rich in cultural and environmental significance, offering glimpses of both ancient heritage and cutting-edge innovation.
This exciting venture is receiving widespread support from various entities including the Department of Community Development, Abu Dhabi Police, and the Ministry of Defense. The initiative is also being sponsored by Mubadala, Ali & Sons, Al Masaood Energy, Aldar Properties, Bayanat, and EDGE.
What is Walk 1000?
Walk 1000 invites participants to embark on a 1,000-kilometre trek through Abu Dhabi, covering terrain that holds deep historical, cultural, and environmental value. It’s equivalent to walking 24 marathons! Beginning in Al Sila, participants will journey through the breathtaking Liwa Desert, pass the iconic Jabel Hafeet, continue to Al Ain, and conclude in Al Wathba.
Ten elite athletes, including Mansour Al Dhaheri, Faisal Alketbi, Khalifa Almazrouei, Ayesha Almemari, and Ohoud Al Dhaheri, are ready to take on this monumental challenge. Their journey will be captured in a documentary, set for release in March 2025, to showcase Abu Dhabi’s heritage, beauty, and resilience to a global audience.
Why the 1,000-kilometre journey?
This initiative is not just about clocking up the steps. It’s about inspiring the community to embrace a holistic approach to health and well-being. Each segment of the journey highlights unique sites chosen for their historical, cultural, or environmental significance. Key environmental stops include the Baynounah Houbara Bird Sanctuary, which emphasises the importance of biodiversity preservation. Technological landmarks like Al Sadeem Observatory underline Abu Dhabi’s commitment to innovation and scientific advancement.
“This challenge embodies our goal of inspiring the community in the emirate—regardless of age or ability—to promote physical activity and maintain healthy habits,” stated Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, CEO of Emirates Foundation. “Our purpose is to inspire the Abu Dhabi community to elevate their holistic health and be part of a happier, healthier, and more cohesive society.”
How to participate
For those inspired to join, there are numerous opportunities to get involved. Active Abu Dhabi encourages residents to participate by clocking 6,000 steps each day via PureHealth’s Pura app. This 30-day walking challenge invites everyone, irrespective of age or fitness level, to take part in the journey.
There’s something for everyone, from weekend events to weekly fitness gatherings across the city. Tailored events include ladies-only sessions and activities designed for people of determination, ensuring inclusivity for all Abu Dhabi residents.
“I am very proud to be helping to create another opportunity for residents across Abu Dhabi to get outside and get active,” said Mansour Al Dhaheri, Founder of Active Abu Dhabi. “Whatever your age or level of ability, the walk and range of community-focused events are ideal opportunities to make changes in your lifestyle and start your health and fitness journey.”
Who is involved?
The Walk 1000 initiative is brought to life by a remarkable collaboration between Emirates Foundation and PureHealth. Emirates Foundation, a national organisation focused on sustainable community development, has been a key figure in social initiatives across the UAE.
PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, brings cutting-edge medical and wellness solutions to the initiative. With a network that includes SEHA, Daman, PureLab, and several other healthcare providers, PureHealth is at the forefront of promoting wellness and longevity.
Shaista Asif, Group CEO of PureHealth, shared her enthusiasm: “Since the launch of Active Abu Dhabi in March this year, we’ve seen the truly transformative power of community when it comes to championing activity. By encouraging everyone to take just a few more steps each day, we believe we can foster healthier lifestyles, strengthen our communities, and ultimately improve overall well-being.”
