Europe’s border shake-up: US visitors to undergo fingerprinting
Starting November, say goodbye to passport stamps and hello to bio metric checks as the EU upgrades its border security.
Dubai: Starting November 10, 2024, US travellers will encounter a major shift in European border procedures.
The European Union is set to replace traditional passport stamps with cutting-edge biometric scans through the new Entry-Exit System (EES). This upgrade will also require American visitors to undergo fingerprinting and digital registration upon arrival. They were earlier exempted from giving biometrics. The change aims to boost security and streamline border management, marking a significant departure from the familiar stamping method used for years.
What’s new?
From November, American travellers will need to undergo fingerprinting and biometric registration upon entering Europe. This new system, confirmed by EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson, aims to modernise border security and manage migration more effectively - as quoted by Travel Off Path.
How will it work?
The EES will track travellers using digital photos, personal data, and fingerprints. The system will store this data for three years and replace the old passport stamping method. This change is part of a broader update to Europe’s border controls.
What about ETIAS?
While the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be introduced in 2025, U.S. travellers won’t need to worry about it until then. ETIAS will require an online application and a €7 fee, but it won’t be necessary for travel this winter.
Streamlined travel ahead
With the EES, you’ll avoid passport stamps but face new bio metric checks. This system promises a more efficient and secure border experience across Europe. Get ready for a digital border revolution!
