DUBAI: Boxing legend and global icon Manny Pacquiao has revealed plans to establish the first-ever Manny Pacquiao Sports Academy in Dubai, set to launch in the first quarter of 2025.
The initiative aims to nurture young athletes by honing their skills and instilling life values such as discipline, resilience, and character.
“I’m really excited about this. It’s been my dream to help young people, and this academy is the perfect way to do that,” Pacquiao said in an interview with GulfNews, expressing gratitude to the Dubai Government for supporting the venture.
The academy, envisioned as a hub for talent development, will not only focus on sports training but also equip participants with essential life skills. Following its launch in Dubai, the project will expand to other countries, underscoring Pacquiao’s vision for a global impact.
A Tribute to Dubai
Pacquiao’s relationship with Dubai runs deep. Speaking during his recent visit, he described the city as his “second home.” “I feel so happy to be here in Dubai. This is my home. So glad to be back,” he said warmly.
On Friday night, he made a special appearance at the Global Village main stage, where thousands of fans welcomed him with open arms. The boxing icon’s connection to the city is built on mutual admiration, with Dubai embracing him as a cherished global ambassador.
Career Milestones
As the only eight-division world champion in boxing history, Pacquiao has cemented his place among the greatest athletes of all time. Reflecting on his iconic career, he recounted his breakthrough victory against Marco Antonio Barrera in 2003.
“I was the underdog in that fight,” Pacquiao reminisced. “Beating Barrera, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters, was a defining moment that propelled me to the top of the sport.”
From legendary clashes with Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton to Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Márquez, Pacquiao’s storied career includes 12 world titles across eight weight classes. Yet, his legacy extends beyond the ring.
A Champion of Humanity
Pacquiao’s philanthropic work has touched countless lives, reflecting his unwavering commitment to public service. As a former Senator of the Philippines (2016–2022), he advocated for healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation reforms.
“We are all stewards of the things that God entrusted to us,” he said. “We must do all we can to help others and leave a positive legacy behind.”
Through initiatives providing scholarships, building homes for the underprivileged, and delivering aid during crises, Pacquiao’s generosity has become a cornerstone of his public image.
Political Comeback
With a steadfast dedication to serving his nation, Pacquiao is set to run for Senate again in the upcoming elections. “I’m running for Senator again because I believe in helping my fellow Filipinos,” he affirmed.
His previous tenure in the Philippine Senate was marked by a focus on legislative reforms aimed at uplifting the marginalised. His re-election bid reflects his enduring commitment to improving lives through effective governance.
Advice to the Youth
Pacquiao also shared guidance for the youth, urging them to embrace sports as a pathway to personal growth. “My advice to young people is to get involved in sports instead of sticking to their smartphones,” he said.
Sports, according to Pacquiao, instill discipline, perseverance, and mental resilience—qualities he believes are vital in overcoming life’s challenges. “We’re seeing too many young people struggling with mental health issues. Sports can help them become stronger mentally and emotionally,” he added.
A Global Icon
Pacquiao’s visit to Dubai was capped off by an emotional reunion with fans at Global Village. The event showcased his enduring popularity and his commitment to inspiring communities worldwide.
With the launch of his sports academy and his continuous efforts in public service, Manny Pacquiao’s legacy is destined to inspire future generations—both inside and outside the ring.
