Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) has been named the world’s top destination for expatriates seeking to start a new life abroad, according to the 2024 Expat Insider report by InterNations.
The Emirate secured the number one spot out of 53 cities surveyed, excelling across several key categories such as housing affordability, digital infrastructure, and ease of securing a visa.
The annual ranking, conducted by InterNations, the largest global expatriate network, assesses cities based on four key metrics: administrative ease (visa processes, local bureaucracy, and bank account setup), housing affordability, digital life (including online government services and internet speed), and language integration (the ease of settling in without speaking the local language).
Ras Al Khaimah outshone other global cities in these areas, making it the top city to start abroad in 2024.
RAK in Expat Essentials Index
This year’s recognition highlights Ras Al Khaimah’s continuous efforts to create an exceptional environment for both work and life. The Emirate’s top ranking in the Expat Essentials Index reflects its commitment to providing a seamless living experience for expatriates.
In addition to securing first place in the overall ranking, Ras Al Khaimah performed impressively in other categories. It ranked second for the “Working Abroad” index, which evaluates expat job satisfaction and opportunities, and fifth for “Ease of Settling In.” These positions underline Ras Al Khaimah's growing reputation as a city that not only welcomes expats but also supports their integration into both the local community and workforce.
InterNations’ global expat community includes over 5.4 million members across 420 cities in 166 countries. In the 2024 survey, Ras Al Khaimah was found to be particularly favourable for expats in terms of housing and integration, with 72 percent of respondents indicating that finding accommodation in the city was easy, a significantly higher figure compared to the global average of 45 percent. Furthermore, 69 percent of expats did not face major concerns with bureaucracy or language barriers when relocating, much higher than the global average of 29 percent.
A Welcoming Expat Community
Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, has played a crucial role in steering the Emirate towards its current status as a leading destination for expatriates. The commitment to improving the city’s living standards aligns with his vision for creating a dynamic and inclusive community for people from around the world.
In response to the recognition, Heba Fatani, Director General of the Ras Al Khaimah Government Media Office (RAKGMO), stated, “This achievement reflects our dedication to creating a safe, welcoming, and thriving community that attracts individuals from all around the world. Ras Al Khaimah’s modern infrastructure, spectacular natural environment, and vibrant business landscape contribute significantly to its reputation as a leading global destination for expatriates.”
Ras Al Khaimah is not only known for its scenic beauty but also for its rich cultural heritage, which spans over 7,000 years. This rich blend of history, natural beauty, and modern infrastructure makes it an appealing destination for expatriates looking to relocate.
Expanding Business Opportunities
The Emirate's strategic location between Europe, Asia, and Africa makes it an ideal gateway for businesses looking to expand within the Middle East and beyond. Ras Al Khaimah’s diverse economy, which does not rely on any single sector for more than 30 percent of its GDP, further bolsters its position as a flexible and resilient economic hub. The city is also known for its relatively low cost of living and high quality of life, including affordable beachfront properties, year-round sunshine, and a competitive business setup process.
Rouba Zeidan, Head of Special Projects at RAKGMO, highlighted the collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to improve the city’s livability. She added, “Earning the top ranking in this global survey is a testament to the vibrant community spirit and the dedication of both sectors to enhancing Ras Al Khaimah’s appeal as a premier international business hub. It’s gratifying to know that those who choose to move to Ras Al Khaimah truly feel at home.”
A City for Work and Play
Ras Al Khaimah offers a wealth of opportunities for both work and leisure. The Emirate is home to Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE, which features thrilling attractions like the world’s longest zip line, Jebel Jais Flight, and 1484 by Puro, the UAE’s highest restaurant. These unique attractions, alongside the city’s serene beaches and stunning desert landscapes, make Ras Al Khaimah an ideal place for expatriates to enjoy a balanced lifestyle.
With its growing expat population, business opportunities, and exceptional quality of life, Ras Al Khaimah has firmly established itself as one of the world’s top destinations for expatriates seeking to relocate, live, work, and thrive.
